11. Chapter 10 - The 13th Floor

Just then Mitchell ran out of the maze, Mason right behind him. Both immediately stopped in their tracks as soon as they saw the leaf in my hand.

"What hap..." Mason said right before the floor underneath Olive, Mitchell, Mason and I crumbled and we fell through!

...

I couldn't see anything, there was thick, inky darkness all around me as I plunged towards the unknown. I looked up and saw a faint beam of light, gradually getting smaller and smaller, until it fully disappeared.

I felt alone, completely alone. My heart filled with dread. I heard a quiet, distant whimper come from somewhere.

I tried to speak, but the words were taken straight from my throat, by the air rushing past, before I could speak them aloud.

I fell for what seemed like forever until suddenly there was a blinding flash of light, then my head hit the concrete.

...

"Erin! Wake up!" I heard a voice shout, louder and louder; closer and closer. "Erin!"

I awoke with a start. Mason was shaking me, and Mitchell was holding Olive, who was crying into his shoulder.

We were in a very large cellar-like room. The walls were lined with shelves full of all sorts of random and creepy items. The air smelled old and rusty and the entire room was cluttered and full of dusty cobwebs.

"Where are we?" I asked, puzzled.

"I don't know for sure," Mason said, trembling. "But Olive thinks we're on the 13th floor."  "How? There is no 13th floor." I replied.

"Um-hm," Olive nodded her head, sitting up, her eyes red and puffy from crying. "The 13th floor exists, and we are on it. I'm positive."

"What?" I questioned, bewildered.

"Once, when I was 8 years old, two elementals, savanna and Phoenix went into the south elevator. Before the elevator was normal, but on that particular day, a 13th button appeared right underneath the 12th button. Being curious elementals they decided to figure out what was on the 13th floor. So they went down but never came back up. Since then the south elevator has been called haunted or cursed."

"That's horrible!" I exclaimed.

Olive nodded, whimpering. "We have to find a way out otherwise we will end up like Savanna and Phoenix."

"I agree. We should split up and look for an exit." Mitchell said. Something in the dimly lit room creaked. "Or just stick together." He shuddered.

...

We looked among the weird items, slowly working our way down to the other side of the room.

Nothing. Not a single clue leading to an exit. Our hopes of getting out alive were beginning to fade. Then Olive screamed! Mitchell, Mason, and I ran over to her.

"What is it!" Mitchell asked desperately.

Olive was kneeling on the ground, her hands over her eyes. "It is  t...them!" She shuddered.

There they were, Savanna and Phoenix. Or at least what was left of them. Two skeletons sat side by side, holding hands, against a shelf. Their clothes reduced to shreds, and the smell of death hung in the air.

I staggered back. "All of this is too much," I mumbled under my breath, Black spots began to cloud my vision. "Too much," Then the world went black and Olive screamed again.

"Erin!"
