Peradventure: A Writing Competition

This time it's adventure in reverse...

When the journey isn’t from home towards an unknown\far away destination, but rather towards the hero/heroine’s home.

We’ve seen this genre in almost every movie, book, tv series, anime, cartoon, etc. and it’s always there to boost the plot, the characters - something to keep the viewer engaged. We are all familiar with the standard model where the protagonist lives a calm and peaceful life... and then something happens and their idyllic world turns upside down and they must go on a journey and face trials to return to the status quo.

It’s all sunshine and rainbows until you watch or read too much of it and become dispassionate, feeling as if the genre lost its shine. The same thing happens when you stare too much at a thing, or at yourself in the mirror as the image becomes distorted.

For that matter, we propose you challenge yourself with this competition and look at it from another angle. We even have some pointers you could use to kickstart your story!

How to Participate

To take part in the writing competition, choose one of the categories below. Your entry can be a fanfiction, regular story, poem, oneshot, etc. The categories are:

  •  Urban legends.

You probably have heard about weird urban legends and myths from the past. Maybe you live in an area where something unusual happened that later on became an urban legend. Use that as the starting point of your story, concentrate on the person\thing around which this legend was built: What do you think? Was it true? Was it just a clever prank? Was it something else? What if this person or thing was misplaced and is trying to get back to their place of origin? Or maybe they’re trying to find a place they can call home.

  • Is horror more your cup of tea?

Then try imagining this character making their way back home from where they are and, during this journey, they are forced to make harder and harder decisions until this character kills someone. When they reach their home, how will they feel about it after all that they’ve been through?

  • The mind can be your dearest friend or your greatest enemy...

Maybe the adventure back home isn’t measured in km, but is a personal journey towards character development. Their home is the place where they’re the happiest, and that place is their mind. So this character doesn’t even move from their bed, but simply examines themselves and the whole story takes place in their mind, the point of departure being a bad place towards a happy one where the only limit is your imagination. Anything can happen in one’s mind.

  • Fanfiction!

It is the perfect place to exercise your world-building or character development, or simply use it as a de-stressing exercise to experiment (we do). Take your favorite characters and make them the protagonists of this adventure. Put them through a grinder and explore their evolution (or involution, as the case may be) as they go from a distant place towards their home, where they can be themselves (or maybe that’s where they need to wear masks; you decide!)

These are just a few ideas for an adventure story that diverge from the overdone model - but you can come up with your own as long as it reverses the genre. May the muse be with you!
